Fastelavn Tradition
Fastelavn fun at school 🎭
Today our Grade 0–4 students celebrated Fastelavn by dressing up, learning about the history of the tradition, and of course taking turns hitting the barrel until the treats fell out. The celebration ended the best way possible — with fastelavnsboller for everyone. Students in the other grades also joined in the pastry tradition!
Fastelavn is a Danish celebration marking the time before Lent. While it has roots in old religious customs, today it’s a joyful winter tradition focused on costumes, play, and community. The famous barrel game, “slå katten af tønden,” once symbolised chasing away evil spirits and welcoming brighter days. Thankfully, the barrel now contains only candy and decorations — no cats involved!
Fastelavnsboller are a big part of the season, and many Danes have strong opinions about which bakery makes the best ones. For our students, enjoying them together is part of what makes the day special.
Happy Fastelavn!
